Answer: A basic homeowners policy does not provide coverage against sinkholes.
Solution: A limited number of insurance companies will sell you an add-on (a.k.a an “endorsement”) to your homeowners policy that protects you in the event your home falls victim to a sinkhole. As a broker I have been getting countless phone calls lately about sinkholes. Everyone has the same question, “do we get sinkholes around here?”. Of course, it’s impossible to answer this question. Although uncommon due to our soil composition, sinkholes have occurred in Pennsylvania and our surrounding states in the past.
